Anatol Stefanet - viola, vocal During 16 years the componence of the group has changed. But one thing remained unchanged – the ideology of the group, which is basically very simple – the love for their country, regardless the ideological concepts of governing parties.
“Pulcinella is a quartet, but he thinks he is an orchestra!” (Armand Meignan) Ouest
France, August 2007 The success of four young musicians is in that they found an original "sound", playing their owncompositions, melting together several idioms borrowed from jazz, rock, "bal musette", improvised music, Balkan and Latin traditions. A touch of madness, poetry, humour, a natural inclination for improvisation, many unexpected instruments (Chinese drum, sliding flute, bendir) were added to the movement and richness of their improvisations. Created in 2004, Pulcinella has already given more than 130 concerts in France and abroad, performed in renowned clubs and festivals such as the Pannonica of Nantes, Grenoble Jazz Festival, Nancy Jazz Pulsation, Festival Assier dans tous ses etats, Festival de Saint Louis (Senegal), Una Striscia di terra feconda (Rome). The group is the winner of the 2005 "Discovery" label awarded by the Federation of Jazz Stages and Improvised Musics; the winner of the “Jazz Migration 2007” awarded by AFIJMA (asociation of 35 French jazz festivals). “Choosing the language of the polyglot, connecting modern music with the music of the past from different parts of the world, “Pulcinella” builds up a theatrical performance through the metamorphosis of sounds. The members of this surprising group are excellent musicians. They love jazz, but not only. As well as Polichinelle (their mascot), this band speaks several languages (paso-doble, tango, musette, soul, funk and jazz, of course), loves transformation and hates permanent forms.”
Pierre-Henri Ardonceau (Jazz Magazine n° 580,
aprilie 2007)
Nik Bartsch – piano Ronin is a wandering masterless samurai, never obeying anybody's orders, but the codex of honor. Nik Bartsch - pianist, producer, chief ideologist of the group and philosopher, chose this name for his band, formed in 2001, deservedly called a phenomenon on European scene. Ronin’s music incorporates elements of jazz, classical, funk, ambient and Japanese ritual music. Exotic synthesis of different genres, united by the artistic credo of musicians - asceticism and ecstasy - is the organic texture of Ronin's music, clearly outlining the original individuality of the group and the original new style of chamber jazz - RITUAL GROOVE MUSIC - created by Nik Bartsch. With Ronin`s music, which the group's leader named "Zen-funk", the musicians consistently follow the same aesthetic vision under various instrumental guises: creating the maximum effect by minimal means. Nik Bartsch's artistic credo is obvious not only in his music, but is revealed in the titles of his compositions. He calls all of them Modules (only their numbers change), as if validating the idea of pure music. Nik Bartsch `s bio: 1997 - Graduation from the 'Musikhoch-schule Zurich'; 1989-2001 - studies in philosophy, linguistics and musicology at the University of Zurich; 2003-04 - stay in Japan. Ongoing work on his RITUAL GROOVE MUSIC as pianist and composer. Leader of zen-funk quintet RONIN (since 2001, with Kaspar Rast, Bjorn Meyer, Andi Pupato & Sha) and MOBILE (since 1997). Teacher for ‘practical aesthetics’ at the 'Musikhochschule Zurich/Winterthur' (2000-03). Numerous awards from 1999, including the jazz priority award of Swiss Arts Council in 2006. Andi Pupato studied percussion in Zurich, later at the Escuela de superacion profesional de musica Ignacio Cervantes in Havana, Cuba and with Jose Luis “Changuito” in Quintana. In 1994, Andi went to Senegal with the Senegalese master drummer Kounta’s band 'Dougou-Fana', where he studied traditional African percussion. At present, he works as a percussionist for various national and international bands (with Andreas Vollenweider among others) and is an active studio musician. Among Sha`steachers are Don Li, Nik Bartsch, Sujay Bobade and Banz Oester and professors of
the Jazz School in Lucerne. Sha is also a member of Mik Keusen’s 'Blau' and the
leader and composer for his own band “Banryu”. The group was supported by Pro Helvetia's special "priority jazz promotion" programme.
Nik Bartsch a absolvit scoala muzicala din Zurich in anul 1997. In 2003-2004 are un sejur in Japonia.
“Changuito” in Quintana. In 1994, Andi a
africana. In prezent este percutionist in diverse formatii nationale si internationale
Lucerna. Sha este de asemenea membru al Mik
Keusen’s 'Blau' si liderul si compozitorul propriei formatii “Banryu”. Formatie
Ronin sustinuta de programul special "priority
jazz promotion” al Fundatiei Pro Helvetia.
Amine M'RAIHI - ud These exceptional musicians are unique not only by their fantastical virtuosity, but also by their self-expression in music. Grown up in the atmosphere of Tunisian and oriental music, Amine & Hamza opened their hearts to sounds coming from all over the world, and create a music based on features of oriental music - maqam and improvisation -, introducing a dynamic expression and an outstanding way of playing. They reached a high level of virtuosity in playing these rare instruments, opening new expressive spaces for the ud and Kanun. They are a singular case in the Arabic music, rather wary to experiments, combining traditional Arab melodies with flamenco playing style and free jazz improvisation. Amine & Hamza gave concerts in some of the most famous Arabic world theatres, such as Cairo Opera House, Beirut Medina theatre, Tunis Medina festival, the Jordan Jarach festival, as well as in Europe: in France, Belgium, Italy, England, Denmark.
Saskia Laroo – trumpet Saskia Laroo, coined in America by press and public as 'Lady Miles Davis of Europe', is one of the few women (Valaida Snow, Clora Bryant, Barbara Donald and Ingrid Jensen) playing trumpet. Saskia Laroo combines today's music by uncontrived romps into new styles, eagerly labelled as "nu jazz" or "swingin' body-music"- a vivacious blend of hip-hop, jazz, salsa, funk, reggae, a world that many other artists dare not venture in. Saskia studied trumpet at the Muziekpedagogische Academie of Alkmaar, the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam and the Muziekpedagogische Academie of Hilversum. In 1982 she formed her own “Salsa Caliente Band”; later she led “Caribbean Expres”, the “Saskia Laroo Band”, “Salsa Bop - a Latin jazz quintet” and “Jazzkia” - her straight-ahead jazz unit. Presently, besides barn-storming with her own of several groups, Saskia Laroo often appears as a special guest artist and is invited as a headliner of many International festivals from around the world. Pianist, composer and a spectacular rap vocalist, Warren Byrd was offered in his teens a scholarship for opera singer, but decided to become a pianist after all. Actually he performs with the Warren Byrd Group; he is a part of the USA well-known formation “The Afro Semetic Experience” and tours regularly with the “Saskia Laroo Band” Daniel Gueli started out as a singer and guitar player in a metal band when he was in high school, but decided to study upright and acoustic bass after being a professional lead singer for some years. Now he is a much requested freelance bass player. Daniel is performing and touring with Saskia Laroo since 2005. He also has his own band “Wasabe”. Andy Valkenburg was admitted to the
Royal Conservatory in
The Hague
and studied there for 7 years. After his final exam
he left to go and study in
New York at the
New
School
for Social Researches, where he took lessons from Buster Williams and Reggie
Workman. He was gigging extensively in the
New York jazz-scene and played regularly
with Phil Harper and Jeremy Pelt. He also stood on stage with several well-known
musicians like Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis and George Benson. Roald Becher started to play drums at the early age of six and took lessons at the music school, where he did his first performances with youth orchestras at the age of nine. He study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he now is a third year drum student. Roald has his own band "Reza Mohajer" but is also a frequently asked freelance drummer. Marc Egea - hurdy-gurdy “We come from different musical styles – folk, classical, jazz, rock,
experimental... At the point of creating the band KaulaKau we were not
interested in putting all these styles into a bag and fusing them, although
this would have been one possible point of departure, but rather in beginning
by playing and undertaking an adventure without trying to second guess too many
elements. The result, therefore, has been completely unpredictable and at the
same time spontaneous. And that’s why we can’t really tell you at the end of
the day exactly what is our musical style....this is simply the music of
KaulaKau.” By these words the group presented their music, but the press wrote: “Original, modern, daring, unusual,
ferocious, insatiable, delicate, concentrated, light... the music of Kaulakau
is all of these things. Neither folk nor jazz: jazz-folk.” (Discmedi) Marc Egea has collaborated with various groups - the trio “Musics de Safeu”, with one of Europe's most prestigious folk groups “El pont d'Arcalis”, in the medieval music group “Faidit” and electro-acoustic band “Electrosonic Monk”. Beside the “Kaulakau” group, he is the founder of a number of traditional and experimental music groups like the “Symphonia Hurdy Gurdy quartet”, Trio “Maram”, duo with Peter Skuce, duo with Cati Plana. Marc composed music for his projects and for brass bands, symphonic bands, chamber music ensembles, pieces for choir, music for contemporary dance, poetry recitals and theatrical shows. He has recorded a dozen or more discs, either as a soloist, as a member of several groups or as a guest artist. Jordi Molina has played as solist in the groups “Els Montgrins” and “Maravella”. He has collaborated with the Lluis Vidal trio, Albert Guinovart, Manel Camp, Santi Arisa, Carlo Rizzo, Jose de Udaeta, “Companyia Electrica Dharma”, “Orquestra Sinfonica del Valles”, “Orquestra Simfonica de Barcelona” and the “Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya”. As a composer he has created some thirty sardanas, cobla music, choral, chamber music and arrangements for TV shows. He has won the OBP Award for Innovative Performance (2000) and the Ramon Serrat Prize for young composers (1992). With groups where he has performed as a soloist he has recorded more than seventy discs covering music of various styles. As a composer and soloist he has released seven CDs. Franco Molinari is professor of double bass at the Conservatory of Vic. He worked in ethnic music with the group “Nebeda”, being a founder member and composer of the majority of their repertoire. He also plays in flamenco groups: with the guitarist and composer Jaime Basulto in the group "El Paño Moruno" and is a member of the Sephardic music group "Mashalà". Enric Canada - professor of drums and percussion at the Escola Municipal de Musica in Girona and at the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona. He has accompanied singers as Joan Manel Serrat, Lluis Llach, Quico Pi de la Serra, Maria de Mar Bonet, Marina Rossell and Mayte Martin. He entered the world of flamenco music in 1989, accompanying Pedro Javier Gonzàlez, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Antonio Martinex "el Ñoño", Diego Cortes, Manzanita, Mayte Martin, Carles Benavent and as a founder of Jaleo group. In the field of traditional music he has worked with “Clau de Lluna”, “Cornamusica”, “Atzavara”, “l'Orquesta Galana” and “Bitaina”.
„Noi venim din diferite stiluri muzicale – folclor, clasica, jazz, rock, muzica experimentala… Ulrich Drechsler - bass clarinet "Music has the power to express anything that can't be said in
words. It can reflect the full existence, the heart, soul and mind of any human
being. The more honest it should be." (Ulrich Drechsler) Since 1999 Ulrich Drechsler is working in Vienna as a freelance composer and musician. He chose the bass clarinet as his main instrument. The broad experiences made in his student years mirrors in his versatile projects. His trio Cafe Drechsler caused
international furore. For their third album the group received the Austrian
Amadeus Award in 2005. In 2001 the group released an adaption of Franz
Schubert's song cycle "Die Winterreise" for jazz quartet. Being strongly fond of the music of Thelonious Monk, he created the group and the CD “The Monk In All Of Us”. This album has been nominated for the prestigious Hans Koller Award in 2005. With his fantastic Quartet,
featuring Oliver Steger, Jörg Mikula and the extraordinairy Norwegian piano
player Tord Gustavsen or with his “Ulrich Drechsler Trio” he creates the music
in which “...human emotions play a
central role. Not the all-important dramatic incidents, but the daily
mysteries, these little things that affect us quietly, compassionately,
tenderly... . Drechsler looks for the esthetics in melody and performance and
he succeeds well in this endeavour. His playing is great, subtle, full of
nuance and emotional depth.” Free
jazz review" Bassist and composer Oliver Steger is playing with Ulrich since 1999 being an
experienced partner of many music projects at the Vienna jazz scene, presents
himself as a sensitive sideman and an excellent soloist. Jorg Mikula has received music education studying jazz drums in Êunstuniversitat in Graz in Austria and in the Berklee Music College in Boston, Massachusetts. Playing in diverse projects he has got the reputation of a highly professional and a serious musician.
“Muzica are puterea de exprima ceea ce nu poate fi spus in cuvinte. Poate reflecta intreaga existenta, inima, sufletul si gindul oricarei fiinte umane. In cvartetul Poesis, Ulrich Drechsler se dedica muzicii clasice.
creeaza o muzica in care „emotiile umane
. Drechser
